National car brand Proton has been Malaysia's enduring pride and joy, producing affordable and quality vehicles that many use on the roads today

The future looks bright for the car manufacturer after achieving significant milestones last year.

The national automaker sold 154,611 cars in 2023, including domestic and export sales. This marks a significant 9.3% growth compared to the 141,432 units sold in 2022. This also reflects Proton's most impressive sales performance since 2012.

With those impressive figures, Proton has managed to solidify its status as the second-largest automotive brand in the country

Meanwhile, Perodua maintains its top spot as Malaysia's largest car manufacturer with over 282,000 cars sold in 2022, according to Statista.

Here are the top three most-sold Proton car models in Malaysia last year:

The Proton X50 sports utility vehicle (SUV) proves to be a popular choice among Malaysians due to its spacious interior and tough-looking exterior. The car can be made to look more aggressive with aftermarket parts which are readily available.

1. Proton Saga — 70,184 units

The Proton Saga secures its spot as the top car largely thanks to its affordability, practicality, and performance. The Saga is a highly capable sedan that will fit almost everyone's needs.

Here are the figures for the other Proton models sold last year:

- Proton X70: 11,200 units
- Proton Iriz: 7,639 units
- Proton X90: 4,815 units
- Proton Exora: 4,473 units
- Proton S70: 109 units

It's worth noting that the Proton S70 was only recently launched in November 2023 and will be delivered to customers in 2024, which explains why only 109 units of the brand-new model were sold last year.
