Skype officially closed down on 5 May 2025, marking the end of an era for many Internet users

It's true; the consumer version of Skype officially signed off this week, closing the chapter on a platform that once revolutionised how we communicated across distances. Microsoft is now focusing on Teams, and Skype users are urged to migrate their chats and contacts there for a more streamlined user experience.

After operating for over two decades, Skype has become a treasure trove of "good ol' memories" for millions worldwide. Here are some of the moments many people still fondly remember:

1. Skype was how you made your first-ever video call

For many, Skype was their first glimpse into the world of video calls. Seeing loved ones across borders in real-time felt both futuristic and intimate, whether it was grandparents watching a baby's first steps, long-distance couples sharing quiet moments, or friends laughing face-to-face despite the miles.

The video quality may not have held up to today's standards, but back then, the novelty and emotional connection were unmatched.

2. Using Echo/Sound Test Service to test your new computer microphone

One of Skype's clever early features was its Echo/Sound Test Service, which allowed users to record their voice and play it back. It was incredibly useful for troubleshooting issues like background noise, echoes, or that dreaded microphone feedback.

Back then, this feature was more important than we might realise today, especially since microphones and software didn't have the built-in echo cancellation and background noise filtering we now take for granted.

3. We're gonna miss those iconic ringtones and alerts

That iconic Skype ringtone definitely brings back memories for many — whether it's catching up with loved ones, or perhaps an unwelcome call from the boss!

Here's a reminder of what it sounds like:

In fact, most of the sounds were ahead of their time: fresh, funky, and with a touch of Frutiger Aero sprinkled in. Our personal favourite? The login and logout sounds for the messaging app.

Here's what they sound like:

Hearing those classic Skype sound effects now definitely triggers a wave of nostalgia. It's great that the Internet has preserved them, keeping a little piece of digital history alive.

4. Skype's emoticons paved the way for the modern-day emojis

Back in the day, emojis did not exist, but we had emoticons in their place.

Emoticons are text-based expressions created using keyboard characters to represent emotions and basic symbols, originating in the early days of the Internet. They often require sideways reading to interpret facial expressions, like :-) for a smile or :-( for sadness. While effective for conveying tone in text, their variety is limited to what can be formed with punctuation and letters.

Here's an animated version of the original emoticons:

5. Skype was one of the most user-friendly applications

In its early days, Skype was often praised for its simple, intuitive design, making it easy to use, regardless of their technical know-how. Also, the 'Frutiger Aero' aesthetics made it everything.

With Skype now gone, it feels like there is a void in our hearts

While Skype eventually faced competition and user experiences became more varied, especially after its acquisition by Microsoft, its early impact was undeniable. It changed the landscape of personal communication, making the world feel a little smaller and bringing people closer in ways that were once hard to imagine.
