Nintendo has announced that it will no longer open pre-orders for its upcoming console, the Switch 2, in the US

This change comes after the US government announced significant tariffs on goods imported from Japan.

Nintendo had initially revealed the new console on Wednesday, alongside the announcement of the US tariffs, and stated that pre-orders would begin soon. However, they have now had to change their plans due to the new financial implications.

Despite the delay in the pre-order schedule, the console will release as planned

Nintendo has announced that the planned Switch 2 pre-orders in the US has been postponed. "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not start on 9 April in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions," the company said in a statement.

Nintendo also clarified that this decision only impacts the US market, meaning pre-orders in the rest of the world will proceed as originally planned.

The tariff plans introduce taxes charged on goods imported from other countries, including Japan and Malaysia

In this case, Japan, where Nintendo is headquartered, is facing a 24% tariff on its exports to the US. This means Nintendo will either have to absorb this extra cost or increase the price of the Switch 2 for American consumers.

Trump argues that these tariffs will strengthen the American economy and safeguard domestic jobs. However, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has described the tariffs as a "national crisis", according to reports in Japanese media. He has pledged that the Japanese government will take comprehensive action to address the situation.
