Google Play Gift Cards In Malaysia Are Going Away. Here's What You Need to Know
Google announced it will discontinue the sale of Google Play Gift Cards in the country starting 15 June 2025.
If you've been topping up your Google Play balance with physical gift cards in Malaysia, it's time to make other plans
Google has announced it will discontinue the sale of Google Play Gift Cards in the country starting 15 June 2025.
The news came via an email notice from Google Payments, confirming that while cards can still be redeemed until mid-June, any remaining balance must be used by 31 January 2026.
After that, any leftover value will vanish.
These prepaid cards, introduced in Malaysia back in 2018, were a go-to solution for users without credit or debit cards
Available at 7-Eleven in denominations of RM50, RM100 and RM200, they were seen as a way to better control app and game spending, especially among younger users or those cautious about digital payments.
Once redeemed, the balance works across the Play Store for apps, games, movies, eBooks and more.
"Promotional Google Play Balance will still be issued or held with applicable expiry dates," Google clarified.
For those running low, the Play Store now accepts a wider range of payment methods, including credit or debit cards, FPX online banking, carrier billing, and local ewallets like Touch 'n Go, Boost, and ShopeePay
While Google hasn't shared a reason for the phase-out, the move likely reflects a broader shift towards digital-first payments and could be a quiet attempt to curb gift card-related scams, which have been a growing concern.
So if you've got any cards tucked away, it's best to redeem and spend them before the deadlines roll around.
