Sources speaking to the two sites say that Apple is gearing up to begin offering repairs for things like broken screens and replacement batteries, rear cameras, volume buttons and more.

This means that Apple will be able to replace aspects of both new handsets in-store and on-site, meaning faulty smartphones should no longer need to be fully replaced (unless it is absolutely necessary).

The news comes from 9to5mac, which explains:

The sources say that Apple will be providing its stores with special machinery to replace the touchscreens on both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. These machines will be used specifically to calibrate the displays.

The screen replacements cost $149 for each device, and this price point is significantly more affordable than the several-hundred dollars required to completely replace a device with a damaged/cracked screen.

But the fingerprint function won't be covered

The iPhone 5C Home button looks to be replaceable in-store, too, but the same cannot be said of the Touch ID-equipped Home button in Apple’s iPhone 5S handset.

It seems that replacing the fingerprint-scanning button, which is protected by sapphire glass and is surrounded by a metallic finger detector, is naturally more of a complex task.

If you are no longer under warranty, you will have to pay a fee depending the damage to the device

Customers without a warranty can reportedly expect to shell out around $149 to replace a broken display, $79 for a new battery and $29 for a new iPhone 5c Home button.

They’re saying it’ll take about 30 minutes to an hour for most repairs, but that’s often going to be less than the hassle of restoring from backup, and for phones out of warranty, the cost savings is significant.

Customers with an iPhone that's under AppleCare warranty won't need to shell out anything to get their device fixed up.

The initiative is expected to begin before the end of the year

The announcement comes after a teardown site found that Apple's new iPad Air is nearly "impossible" to repair.

Although it's unclear whether these options will be available in Apple stores outside the US.

There's no word yet on exactly when Apple stores will begin offering iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c repairs, but it's expected that they'll be added to the repair program before the end of the year.
