Until now only men's teams have featured on the popular EA Sports game which was first released in 1993. The addition of women teams will be a step towards raising the women's game, according to USA team captain Alex Morgan.

"To be one of the first female players included in the game is something we'll always be able to look back on and be proud of. Hopefully it will help raise the profile of the women's game even further."

Development was supported by a motion capture session at EA Canada with four top players from United States Women’s Team: Sydney Leroux, Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, and Megan Rapinoe. In capturing the players’ gestures the FIFA 16 game will now feature new walks, runs, sprints and horizontal movements
