The 2014 Thomas Cup final between Malaysia and Japan is finally underway. Malaysia leads 1-0 after Lee Chong Wei beat Kenichi Tago in straight sets 21-12, 21-16 in the first singles.

The first doubles has started between Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How and Kenichi Hayakawa-Hiroyuki Endo. Tan-Hoon go into the interval eight points ahead 11-3.

Japan have been semi-finalists twice before, in Kuala Lumpur in 2010 and the 2012 Wuhan edition, but they have never been in the final. Malaysia have won it five times before (1949, 1952, 1955 – as Malaya; 1967 and 1992) but the last one was 22 years ago.
