The Tawau High Court today, 14 April, sentenced 35-year-old Nurima Juli to 20 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to causing the death of her ex-husband, Nurman Bakaratu, in January 2023

Justice Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng convicted Nurima under an alternative charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, reported Harian Metro.

In delivering his sentence, the judge said the court took into account both the prosecution and defence's submissions, as well as public interest and the facts of the case.

"The court acknowledges that the accused pleaded guilty before the trial commenced. While she is a first-time offender, she showed no remorse and instead attempted to justify her actions," he said.

The woman and her stepbrother, Sadam Kiram, were previously charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code with the murder of the e-hailing driver

The offence, allegedly committed at an oil palm plantation in Tawau on 13 January 2023, carries the mandatory death penalty or a jail term of 30 to 40 years with whipping.

Both had pleaded not guilty at the time. However, following Nurima's guilty plea to the lesser charge, prosecutors withdrew the murder charge against both accused.

The court subsequently acquitted and discharged Sadam, while Nurima's sentence was ordered to run from 26 April 2024.

Nurima was previously the prosecution's key witness in an earlier trial where 8 individuals — including former ESSCOM intelligence chief SAC Datuk Mat Zaki Md Zain (Rtd) and 6 police officers — were accused of conspiring to kill Nurman. That case collapsed in January 2024 after Nurima made a confession on the witness stand, admitting to stabbing her ex-husband with a pair of scissors.

Following her confession, the prosecution dropped the charges against all eight individuals.
