Why This Nasi Kandar Chain Has To Pay Astro Over RM220,000 For Broadcasting Its Content

Thaqwa (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, which operates the popular nasi kandar chain Restoran Thaqwa Classic, has agreed to pay a subsidiary of Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd RM221,773.20 for broadcasting its content at multiple eateries
According to FMT, Thaqwa reached a settlement with Astro subsidiary Measat Broadcast Systems Sdn Bhd through a consent judgement at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
While Thaqwa had valid subscriptions for two premises to use Astro's pay-TV broadcasts, the nasi kandar chain had been broadcasting Astro content at eight eateries without permission
The restaurant chain used Astro smart cards, decoder boxes, and other equipment to access and display Astro content, breaching subscription agreements on unauthorised use of Astro's pay-TV broadcasts.
With the settlement, Thaqwa has also agreed to use their Astro subscription solely at the authorised locations and to respect Astro's copyright and intellectual property rights, reported FMT.
According to Astro, this settlement is just one of several cases it is pursuing to protect its intellectual property rights
Astro said that the company is deeply committed to combating digital piracy and would take firm legal action to protect intellectual property rights, reported New Straits Times.
The High Court in November 2022 stated that it was illegal for commercial premises to show content to the public from unauthorised sources, including Astro broadcasts, without a valid commercial licence.
