While the incident reportedly happened in the afternoon on Friday, 26 December, the video continues to circulate on WhatsApp four days later
What could have caused the retaining wall to collapse?
Continuous rainfall could have caused a pressure build-up against the retaining wall, causing the wall to collapse.
What is a retaining wall? A retaining wall is a structure that holds or retains soil behind it. There are many types of materials that can be used to create retaining walls like concrete blocks, poured concrete, treated timbers, rocks or boulders. Some are easy to use, others have a shorter life span, but all can retain soil.

The Hub, scheduled to complete in 2018, is a commercial development by SDB Properties on a 2.5 acre plot of land near SSTwo Mall
This development consists of a 44-storey tower and 13 blocks of 4-storey shop offices, featuring extensive facilities including a rooftop swimming pool, gymnasium and a garden lounge. Back to that video of the collapsing wall, should we be worried about landslides and flooding in the West Coast? Well, it depends where you are in the west.
On 26 December, Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, senior meteorological officer, said states in the west coast were expected to experience flash floods due to the short periods of rain there. He said the forecast was based on the movement of the prevailing North-East Monsoon, as per a Bernama report.
Malacca and Penang are the only states in the peninsula not affected by the monsoon so far.
