An empty landfill in Sibu, Sarawak, was recently crowded with people as villagers dug for some "hidden treasures". They were looking not for gold, but chicken wings!
According to The Borneo Post, news that a large number of chicken wings was buried near the Bukit Aup has been spreading like wildfire since last Friday.
A source told Malay daily Berita Harian that the authorities decided to dispose of the chicken wings here following some issues relating to tax arrears.
However, the Customs Department has dismissed claims that it dumped the chicken wings and denied that it has anything to do with the matter.
While it is still unclear what really transpired, photos on social media showed that several men were seen dumping blocks of chicken wings into the ground
It was reported that about five or six containers carrying the chicken wings were imported from New Zealand and brought in through Peninsula Malaysia, but they were seized at the Rajang Port in Sibu after the owner failed to pay relevant taxes.
The discovery led to a digging frenzy as dozens of people flocked to the site for the free chicken wings

However, the authorities have cautioned against the consumption of the chicken wings
It was reported that the authorities are currently investigating the source of these chicken wings and have taken measures to ensure that the public stop digging for them as they could be hazardous to people’s health.
"We strongly advise those who had taken the chicken wings not to consume them as we do not know its source and quality," Sibu division resident Hii Chang Kee was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
Meanwhile, netizens said that the latest fiasco exposes the reality of the livelihood of the villagers living in the area
They said that this was a "pitiful sight" to see villagers scrambling to search for chicken wings and were willing to risk their health for "free food".
Others expressed their worries and said that some might take advantage to sell these chicken wings to unsuspecting customers.
