Parliament is no stranger to poetry as the Agong and members of parliament (MPs) have often recited poems to convey their messages.

Songs, however, are a rarity. And an opposition MP recently surprised the Dewan Rakyat with his singing.

During the morning session of the parliamentary sitting yesterday, 8 March, Sungai Siput MP S Kesavan started singing a song before asking whether the government will do anything to grow the local music industry.

"Music is one of the economic branches that can help build social development," said the lawmaker who is aligned with PKR.

"As an example, Port Dickson MP (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) likes a Tamil song from singer MGR."

MGR refers to M G Ramachandran, a singer, actor, filmmaker, as well as elected political leader in India who passed away in 1987. He founded AIADMK, an influential Dravidian party in South India.

"The name of the song... Naan Aanaiyittal..." said S Kesavan before he started singing several verses of the song

"The song means, if I am destined to lead the country, I will ensure the poverty-stricken rakyat won't suffer anymore."

S Kesavan was interrupted by a fellow MP while he was trying to explain the meaning of the song, as if to tease him for singing in parliament.

"So my additional question here is to ask whether the Ministry (of Human Resources) will help the youth in the music industry," the MP continued.

"Will they be given training to grow the (local music) industry?"

In response, Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan said it is not his ministry's current focus to grow the music industry

However, he said his ministry will conduct a study on the suggestion and may introduce a programme for people in the industry in the future.

Earlier, M Saravanan also acknowledged S Kesavan's singing and commented that the song was so popular that even Anwar knows it.
