The police have received two reports regarding a viral video of men stuffing cats into gunny sacks outside an apartment complex in Cheras, Selangor on Saturday, 11 January

The 38-second video was shared by animal activist Shima Aris and non-governmental organisation Stray Free Foundation on social media.

In their posts, they called out residents of the apartment block for allegedly capturing the cats and tying them up in gunny sacks before throwing them into the trunk of a car to be disposed of at an unknown location.

The activists urged the public to lodge police reports and complaints to the Veterinary Services Department (DVS) to hold the men in the video accountable for their actions.

However, the police said they have received two conflicting reports about the incident

In a statement on Sunday, 12 January, Kajang district police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said the reports were lodged separately on Saturday and Sunday, with the first accusing the men of mistreating the cats in the viral video.

He said the second report denied that the cats were abused.

"We received another report from a committee member of the apartment residents' association featured in the video, who denied any mistreatment or abuse of the animals," Naazron said, as quoted by Berita Harian.

Nonetheless, Naazron said DVS has also confirmed receiving reports on the matter

He said the department intends to take action under the Animal Welfare Act 2015, and also reminded the public to avoid engaging in any form of animal cruelty.
