The 3km narrow road, which passes through the Guillemard Reservoir, collapsed after a heavy downpour yesterday afternoon.

It was reported that huge, dangerous cracks measuring about 200m long were seen on the road that goes around Pepper Estate to Tanjung Bungah.

The road would be closed for six weeks for repairs.

According to local media reports, early investigations have revealed the old rubble retaining wall supporting the road has caved in. The recent heavy rain had caused the earth below the road to be washed away.

The sight of the road opening up was rather alarming

The authorities first detected the problem in May, but could not begin the repair works due to a delay in funds

According to the Public Works Department (PWD) the cracks were first noticed by his officers about five months ago but funds from the Federal Government were delayed, which subsequently led to the delay of the remedial works.

"Following an open tender, a local contractor was awarded the contract and work began on 13 September. From our initial investigation, it appears that rapid water movement in the area made the road unstable, causing the collapse," he told reporters yesterday.

He added that the cost for the project may go up from the initial RM365,000 after yesterday's incident.

Residents who live nearby have been told to vacate immediately for their own safety

The state's Public Works, Utilities and Public Transportation committee chairman Lim Hock Seng, advised residents in the area to evacuate to avoid any untoward incident.

He urged the residents to seek refuge with relatives or friends until a suitable location can be identified as a temporary shelter.
