A couple, aged 19 and 21, are under investigations for dumping their newly born into Sungai Kenawar

The incident happened at 11.15pm Friday night

According to Segamat police chief Superintendent Raub Selamat, the father of the newborn, who worked at an auto spare part shop, admitted to putting the baby into a plastic bag before dumping it into a river at about 11.15pm, 17 November.

"We took the male suspect to the incident location at about 10am, Saturday, and managed to find the plastic bag floating near the river bank at about 4pm," the police chief Superintendent was quoted as saying by NST Online.

The baby was born in the woman's family house in Paya Pulai, Segamat, and was about six month-premature

Raub said that the unmarried couple were held at Segamat Hospital emergency ward at about 4am, Saturday, when they were seeking treatment.

"We received a report from a hospital employee who was suspicious after finding the young woman who appeared to have just delivered a baby and was bleeding heavily in her private part," Raub was quoted saying.

While the male suspect has been remanded for four days to assist in the investigations under Section 318 of the Penal Code, the female suspect is still warded at HDS

The police have not yet been able to find the body of the newborn.

Earlier this month, a newborn with his umbilical cord still attached was found abandoned in bushes behind a hotel in the Royal Belum Rainforest Resort, Pulau Banding, Perak:
