A Thai woman abandoned her newborn after giving birth on a street in Bangkok during the Songkran festival
The Songkran festival, celebrated as the Thai New Year, takes place annually from 13 to 15 April.
According to local newspaper Thaiger, the incident occurred on Monday, 14 April, when 27-year-old Piyathida was celebrating with her friends in the Don Mueang district.
CCTV footage captures her going into labour by the roadside near a parked vehicle. She is seen pulling down her trousers to deliver the baby, tearing the placenta, and then leaving the newborn behind at the scene.
Despite visible bleeding, Piyathida reportedly rejoined her friends after the incident.
She initially denied being the mother when confronted after the newborn was discovered
However, she eventually confessed after persistent bleeding. Rescuers then rushed her to Prachathipat Hospital for treatment.
The infant was found alive but later died despite rescue workers' attempts to resuscitate it with CPR.
A local police officer confirmed that Piyathida admitted that the baby was hers but claimed she could not remember who the father was.
She was under the influence of alcohol during questioning. One of her friends claimed that she is unemployed and that her relatives had cut ties with her. She reportedly has two other children with her ex-husband.
The officer assured that she would face legal charges upon her release from the hospital.
