According to The Star, Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said that Hassan was detained because he was in a "forbidden area" in the airport where flight passengers with boarding passes are supposed to get on their flights.

Mustafar added that Hassan will be referred to the Immigration Department after police are done with questioning.

Mustafar also mentioned that the Immigration Department will get in touch with the Syrian embassy to facilitate Hassan's deportation

It was previously reported that Hassan does not want to go back to Syria to fight in a war he does not believe in. However, Mustafar said that "we need to have closure here."

Often referred to as the “airport prisoner”, the 36-year-old’s plight has been highlighted by international media as well as social media influencers like Nas Daily

His situation was brought to light when he started posting videos of himself living in the transit terminal of klia2 on social media.

Just recently, famous daily vlogger Nas Daily made a video about Hassan and how the only option he has was to wait for a Canadian refugee status.
