Travelling abroad can be loads of fun, but sometimes it can be scary, especially when you experience a hiccup in your plans

A couple who travelled from Semporna to Tawau, Sabah, on 27 July, Wednesday, found themselves stranded with little to no cash when every single automated teller machine (ATM) seemed to be rejecting their credit cards.

This situation forced them to take a private ride to a nearby bank with ATMs, but alas, they faced the same issue. They had no cash or funds to even pay the driver who took them to the bank, much less travel around to find other ATMs.

But as luck would have it, a kind local (who will be referred to as F) noticed they were facing problems and approached them to ask what was wrong

Upon hearing their plight, F decided that he would help the couple. He first paid the fee for their private ride and then offered to drive them to different banks so they could keep trying until they were able to find an ATM that would allow them to withdraw some cash.

After driving to a few other banks and trying the ATMs there, they finally found one that accepted their credit cards. Whatever the issue was that prevented the couple from withdrawing cash is still unknown. At least they had some much-needed cash on them now.

Their new friend's kindness went above and beyond what the couple were expecting

After their issue was resolved, he decided to drive them to the bus terminal, which was a lengthy distance away from his original route. On the way there, F even treated them to a meal from a fast food establishment.

He refused any compensation for his effort and time from the couple, and both parties parted ways after he dropped them off at the bus terminal.

To cap it off, she gave some tips on how to handle a situation like this

Victoria advised travellers to not be shy when you are in trouble. "Ask for help and don't be afraid to talk to others. In reality, people are more kind and nice than we think, and they can really help you if they are willing to understand what you need help with," Victoria said.

Her boyfriend also added, "Communication is the key to all the situations or problems we deal with."

Despite their bad experience with the ATMs, the couple's encounters with Malaysian locals were the exact opposite

In a conversation with SAYS, Victoria mentioned that this isn't the first time she and her boyfriend have been to Sabah.

In all of their trips there and around Malaysia, they have always experienced great hospitality and friendliness from the locals. She said that they felt like they were part of a big family and thought everyone should come and visit Malaysia.

Netizens were touched by how kind F was being towards the couple

Some users were wishing him the very best and hoped he would be blessed for his charitable actions in the future.

Others mentioned how Sabahans are generally hospitable and kind individuals. So, kindness that was shown by F, is common behaviour amongst other locals.
