A 35-year-old father of three has been sentenced to three months in prison by the Batu Pahat Magistrate's Court for stealing bananas
Magistrate Nurasidah A Rahman delivered the judgment after Muhammad Fadil Ismail, a widower and lorry attendant, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing bananas from a farm, reported the New Straits Times.
The farm owner, who had noticed thefts of his prized "rastali" bananas, had installed a CCTV camera on his property. The footage captured Fadil cutting down a banana tree and making off with the fruit.
The evidence prompted the farm owner to file a police report on the morning of 4 January.
Authorities arrested Fadil shortly after the police report was lodged, and an investigation confirmed his involvement in the thefts
Deputy public prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip and Inspector Ling Shao Shen led the prosecution, while National Legal Aid Foundation's Kamarularifin Nordin represented Fadil.
