S'pore Student Allegedly Offers RM90,000 Bribe To Johor Cop But Gets Arrested Instead
The charge invokes a fine of not less than five times the sum or value of the gratification.

A Singaporean student and his friend were jointly charged with giving a bribe to a Johor policeman amounting to RM90,000 last year
According to Bernama, Singaporean Donavan Sia Qi Xun, 27, who was a student at a college in Kuala Lumpur, allegedly committed the offence in front of a restaurant in Taman Suria, Johor, along with his friend Law Wen Xiang, 32.
The bribe served as an inducement for the policeman not to take action against Sia for the offence of "cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property" under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
The duo pleaded not guilty at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court yesterday, 17 January.
They also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge framed under Section 214 of the Penal Code for giving gratification to a person in consideration of screening an offender from legal action at the same place, time and date.
If found guilty, the pair face imprisonment for one-fourth of the longest term of imprisonment provided for the offence.
They may also be slapped with a hefty RM450,000 fine, or both.
Upon conviction, the charge invokes a fine of not less than five times the sum or value of the gratification, or RM10,000 — whichever is higher.
Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail granted each of them bail of RM40,000 with one surety. He also ordered them to report themselves to the Johor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office every month.
The court set 19 February for mention.
