The Selangor state government has decided that it will discontinue the RM2,500 'wang khairat kematian' (death benefit payments) for its citizens, Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari announced Friday

There would be no payments made upon the death of anyone aged 60 years or above (senior) from the state following the discontinued scheme, reported Bernama.

According to Amirudin, the state government is doing this because it's introducing a new scheme for senior citizens called Skim Mesra Usia Emas (SMUE) on 30 April.

Under the SMUE scheme, senior citizens would enjoy benefits while they were living.

The state government wants senior citizens to appreciate and enjoy state revenue while they are still alive.

Seniors must be registered in order to enjoy the SMUE benefits

"SMUE's annual Jom Shopping vouchers amounting to RM100 would enable seniors to buy essential items ahead of the festive season," he was reported as saying by Bernama after attending the Jelajah Maju Bersama Menteri Besar Selangor yesterday.

According to Amirudin, the state government expected more than 200,000 senior citizens in Selangor to enjoy the SMUE benefits while they were living.

The state government would be allocating RM20 million a year to ensure the smooth implementation of the (shopping) vouchers, the Menteri Besar added.

Under the SMUE though, any registered senior citizen who passed away before 30 April 2019, their next of kin could claim the death benefit payment amounting to RM2,500 before 31 May this year
