The sighting of a 'spaceship-looking' superyacht at the mouth of the Perlis River, Kuala Perlis has caught the attention of fishermen and villagers, making them wonder who it belongs to

According to Berita Harian, the yacht was seen entering the river near the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal at about 12pm last Saturday, 13 August.

The Adastra superyacht reportedly cost around USD45 million (over RM200 million) and was believed to have travelled from Langkawi to the area for repair works at a nearby shipyard.

Perlis Fishermen's Association (PELARIS) board member Jasmi Hashim said his party was informed by fishermen and residents in the area about the presence and movement of the luxury yacht, adding that no complaints were received from the passage.

"In fact, we also understand that the luxury yacht was actually moving to the Perlis Marine Engineering (PME) Sdn Bhd dock located in Kampung Tengah Kuala Perlis for repair works," he said.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) confirmed that the marine office in Perlis granted the yacht permission to dock at PME.

Videos of the yacht sighting went viral on social media over the weekend, with many netizens highlighting the contrast of the ultra-luxury vessel with the rustic boats at the fishermen's village

Speaking to reporters, 53-year-old Mat Che Ya said he has seen many medium-sized ships pass through the estuary, but sophisticated luxury yachts are rarely seen in the area.

"Many ships have passed through here, but they are not that big. Yachts like the one yesterday (13 August) are rarely seen here," the fisherman told Berita Harian.

"So when the yacht cruised through here, it looked like a spaceship on the water because it didn't look like a ship or boat that we usually see."

The fisherman's observation is true. The Adastra yacht is known for its striking spaceship profile around the world.

In fact, the name of the vessel, Adastra, is a Latin phrase for "to the stars".

The 52.5-foot vessel is a trimaran-type superyacht built by McConaghy Boats. A trimaran is a multi-hull boat that comprises a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls, which are attached to the main hull with lateral beams.

According to US luxury-lifestyle magazine Robb Report, the boat's top speed is 23 knots and can get into shallow areas that traditional yachts cannot.

The yacht is designed to accommodate nine guests and up to six crew members. It features a spacious aft deck with lounges and an al fresco dining area. Guests can relax on the foredeck in the main salon that comes with large sunbeds.

Additionally, the yacht's garage door folds out to create a diving platform.
