In southern China, a bakery worker's brush with hypothermic terror has triggered national outrage — not just for the act itself, but for the dismissive aftermath

On 31 March, at a bakery in Jieyang, Guangdong, a woman known only as Momo entered the store's walk-in freezer to retrieve supplies.

Surveillance footage later showed a male colleague deliberately closing the freezer door behind her, sealing her inside the -18°C unit.

Her muffled banging can be heard in the video as he lingers nearby — but makes no move to help.

Alone in the freezing dark, Momo managed to call her boss from her smartphone and escape after a few minutes by locating a hidden latch

Though physically unharmed, the psychological toll lingers.

"I was extremely scared," she later said, according to South China Morning Post. "I slammed hard on the door, but was not responded to by anyone outside."

The man initially denied any intent, later calling it a "mistake" only after police intervened

He received a formal warning — a response Momo slammed as insufficient, describing his apology as insincere.

But it's the framing of the incident as a "prank" by local authorities that has fuelled wider fury online.

Users on China's social platforms have accused the system of downplaying potential criminal behaviour

One commenter wrote, "This isn't a joke — it’s attempted murder." Another criticised the bakery's lack of safety training and protocols.

While officials say the matter is "satisfactorily resolved", the public remains unconvinced.
