Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has retimed its MH740/741 flights after the aircraft’s belly was hit by an airside vehicle at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today.

Flight MH740 was supposed to have departed for Yangon at 10.05am but the vehicle, which belonged to a vendor, rammed into the belly.

In the 8.50am incident, a 25-year-old worker driving a car belonging to a MAS vendor company had apparently parked next to the aircraft to supervise loading of luggage into the plane’s cargo hold.
The runaway car then crashed into the rear lower part of the aircraft.
The 25-Year-Old Driver Confessed That He Did Not Fully Engage The Handbrake Of His Car
It is learnt that the driver did not properly engage the parking brakes, resulting in the vehicle rolling off. The runaway car then crashed into the rear lower part of the aircraft.
Meanwhile, a police spokesman said the 25-year-old driver had confessed to not fully engaging the handbrake of his car. “Without him noticing, the car moved towards the plane and got stuck underneath the aircraft. We removed the vehicle by deflating the car’s front tyres,” he said.

The car became lodged under the aircraft and MAS engineering personnel later removed the vehicle by deflating its tyres to lower it. The aircraft was later towed to a maintenance hangar for a thorough inspection on the damage, which was said to be only “minor scratches”.
Preliminary Assessment Showed No Immediate Risk To The Structure Of The Aircraft, But The Plane Had To Be Grounded For A Thorough Check
MAS operations director Captain Izham Ismail said their engineers were on site to assess the damage. “The preliminary assessment showed no immediate risk to the structure of the aircraft. However the grounding of the aircraft was necessary to conduct a thorough check,” he said.
