The sudden death of Karpal Singh has left a huge void not only in the lives of his family members, but also in the lives of residents of Jelutong, who had fondly given him the moniker "Tiger of Jelutong"

Image via imgur.comAlthough Karpal, who defended his Jelutong seat for 21 years from 1978 to 1999, was known for his sharp and caustic comments of his opponents, be it in politics or in court, to the Jelutong residents he was a gentle, humble soul who was always there for them. When news of his death spread, it could be said that besides Karpal’s family and his DAP comrades, the people of Jelutong – a working class area with narrow roads and mostly low and middle-class homes – were the most affected. Karpal, after all, was their most famous product.

A 68-year-old resident, who only wished to be known as Tan, said Karpal made Jelutong famous. “Every Malaysian knew of Jelutong after he became MP, especially after people started calling him the Tiger of Jelutong. I’m just so sad that he died due to an accident, not because of old age,” he said, adding that Karpal was the first person the residents thought of contacting whenever they faced a problem in the constituency.

Candlelight vigils were also held in Penang and KL to pay tribute to the late Karpal Singh
In Penang, about 100 attended the event organised by ATC college law students at the Esplanade, where the crowd lit candles and placed them on a banner printed with the names of Karpal and his personal assistant Michael Cornelius. As mourners wrote messages on the banner, the crowd held white candles and observed a minute of silence to pray for Karpal’s and Michael’s souls.

Similar vigil was held at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur last night where some 150 people, mostly clad in black turned up to show their respect for Karpal. They illuminated the night with their white candles and wrote farewell messages on a scrapbook on a table beside Karpal's portrait that bore the words 'Karpal Singh: True Malaysian'.

An environmental consultant from KL, Surinjeet Singh, said he had never met Karpal in his life, but turned up last night to pay his respects
"With deep regret, I have never met Karpal Singh... but it's like a family member had passed away," he said.

Prominent lawyer Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan paid her last respect at the late YB Karpal Singh's home this morning. She was seen sobbing and hugging Karpal's son Gobind with words of comfort for him. In the afternoon around 2.15 pm, Catholic church leaders Archbishop Emeritus Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam, Bishop Sebastian Francis and Bishop Emeritus Antony Selvanayagam also made their way to Karpal's home. Pakiam recalled his school days with Karpal.

Details about State Funeral Procession of the late Karpal Singh:
The funeral procession will be held this Sunday, 20th April 2014, from his residence at 144A Jalan Utama heading towards Dewan Sri Pinang by 9am. The procession will be led by St. Xavier's Institution Band. The cortege will be placed at Dewan Sri Pinang for public to pay their last respects, and 10.30 am onwards for Penang Governor, State Executive Councillors, State Agencies, DAP, Pakatan Rakyat, other political parties, associations and family members. The cortege will leave for Bukit Gantang Crematorium by 11am.
