Perak Police Chief: Dashcam Footage Shows UPSI Bus Was Speeding, Calls It Key Evidence
This comes after a dashcam owner came forward with crucial evidence to help determine the cause of the crash.
Dashcam footage shows the bus driver appeared to be speeding before the fatal accident that killed 14 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and one bus attendant, police said
Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin said the owner of the dashcam that captured the incident had come forward to assist in the investigation, reported the New Straits Times.
He said the dashcam owner would have their statement recorded, as the footage is expected to provide crucial evidence in determining the cause of the crash.
Noor Hisam said the footage could help determine the bus's speed and road conditions at the time of the accident.
The dashcam footage can be found below:
"It's clear that everyone can see how the bus was speeding, and to make things worse, the [guardrail] penetrated the bus body directly from the front," said the state police chief
Noor Hisam explained that the impact of the crash was concentrated on the left side of the bus, where the vehicle struck the guardrail head-on, killing passengers seated in that section.
"Most of the injured passengers sustained injuries to their left shoulders after being thrown from the right side to the left when the bus overturned," he said.
When asked about survivors' claims that the bus was speeding and there was a burning smell before the crash, Noor Hisam said their statements would also be recorded as part of the investigation.
He said the police would not disclose information from the investigation at this time, as doing so could compromise the case.
He added that he had personally visited the accident site and observed that the road was steep, poorly lit, lacked proper road markings, and the crash occurred around midnight after it had rained.
Investigators are currently working to determine whether the crash was caused by human error or technical failure.
