The Penang government will rename the 5.5km-long Lebuhraya Bandar Cassia to Jalan Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in honour of the late fifth prime minister

In a statement yesterday, 16 April, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state executive council unanimously approved the decision to rename the highway to honour the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his contributions and service.

The council has also declared that government premises and local authority offices across the state will fly the Penang flag at half-mast this Friday, 18 April, as a final mark of respect.

"The late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi played a pivotal role in the development of the nation and the state of Penang during his tenure from 2003 to 2009," said Chow.

He added that Abdullah, who was born in Bayan Lepas, Penang, would be remembered for initiating the Second Penang Bridge, officially known as the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge

Chow described the bridge as a "gift" to Penang, as it boosted growth between Batu Maung on the island and the new industrial zone of Bandar Cassia in Batu Kawan.

He added that Abdullah personally named Bandar Cassia on 24 August 2004.

"Therefore, to preserve his legacy, the state government has decided to rename Lebuhraya Bandar Cassia to Jalan Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi," Chow said.

He added that under Abdullah's leadership, Penang benefited from several major initiatives

These include the RM1 billion expansion of the Penang International Airport, the RM2.7 billion development of Penang Sentral, the Butterworth Outer Ring Road, and the establishment of the Northern Corridor Economic Region.

"Tun Abdullah's passing is a great loss to the nation, especially to the state of Penang," Chow said.
