Maszlee: Students No Longer Have To Sit Through Boring, Lengthy School Assemblies
The Education Minister emphasised the need for an immediate change in lengthy speeches and one-way activities.

A 10-minute Assembly Module (M10MP), developed by a group of lecturers and students, will be implemented in schools to make assemblies more engaging
"Lengthy speeches and one-way activities need to be changed immediately," said Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik during the 60th anniversary of special education at the Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Ilmu Khas Campus yesterday, 12 February, The Borneo Post reported.
The 42 activities under the new module range from Science, Music, and arts and crafts, to Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), school-based assessments and values.
In order to "hone leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills," the 10-minute assemblies will be conducted by students themselves
"Assemblies are known to be boring for students but now they have the chance to lead," said Fatin Nuratikah Ahmad Shuhaimi, one of the students from Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Kampus Ilmu Khas, Cheras, who was involved in drawing up the module.
"There can be a physics project where students put different types of objects into a balloon. They then shake it and listen to the type of noise each object makes," she explained, The Star reported.
The assembly module was adopted by 253 schools in 2017 and received positive feedback in the first six months of its implementation
Although the module would not be made compulsory for schools, the Education Minister hoped that teachers would embrace it for its creativity and innovation.
"Every school is free to explore its own creativity in implementing the weekly assembly," said Maszlee.
"We need fresher ideas and unconventional approaches to education," he added.
