A popular nasi kandar eatery in Cheras is facing backlash after a viral video showed a rat feasting on trays of food, including what appears to be ayam masak kicap
The video, uploaded to Facebook on 11 April, shows the rodent confidently climbing onto a food counter and helping itself to several uncovered dishes. It only scurried away after being startled.
"This is disgusting and dangerous," one user wrote, while another pointed out, "If the rat is brave enough to come out when people are around, imagine what happens when it's closed."
Angry customers have flooded the eatery's Google page with one-star ratings, demanding the eatery be shut down and thoroughly cleaned
Under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009, food premises must remain clean and free from pest contamination. Violations can result in fines, closure, or further enforcement by health officers.
In a statement, the eatery expressed regret over the incident
It also confirmed that health authorities have instructed them to temporarily close.
"We deeply regret and are truly sorry for what happened," said the owner of the eatery.
He added that while the restaurant conducts out regular cleaning and pest control, the surrounding drainage and sewage systems have long been plagued by a serious rat infestation beyond their control.
"Despite our efforts, one of these pests managed to enter our premises that night," he said, taking full responsibility for the incident and promising improved hygiene standards moving forward.
