Proud of MP Sam Lim, who used three languages in his first speech, Watts said in his tweet, posted on Tuesday, 6 September, "I'm so proud the reality of the thriving diversity of the modern Australian community is now being reflected in our parliament."

In the one-minute-23-second video, Lim told the House of Representatives that he would like to express gratitude to his supporters in the first two languages that he learned, which are Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin.

"To all my friends in Malaysia, Australia, and abroad. Thanks for all your care and love. Special thanks to all who have reached out to support and help me in the Australia general election," he said in his maiden address at the parliament.

He won against Ben Morton of the Liberal Party by a 9.5% margin in May 2022 after receiving support for campaigning against climate change. The Labor Party candidate's victory was an unlikely result.

He was a police officer in Malaysia before he emigrated to Australia in 2002 with his wife and children. He joined the Australian Police Force at the age of 45.

The former dolphin trainer has been known for his work with the multicultural communities in Australia facing difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and was named Western Australia's police officer of the year in 2020.

In the tweet, the PM said, "Bahasa Melayu is heard in Australian Parliament! I am proud to see Bahasa Melayu being elevated on the world stage by @SamLimMP when delivering his inaugural speech in the Australian Parliament."

"Congratulations on your appointment as Tangney MP in Perth and best of luck to you," he added.
