"Participation is voluntary: however, cooperation from members of the public is greatly appreciated. All information collected will be used only for the purpose of deriving statistics at the national level," the statement read.

MCMC also warned that no money will be collected nor will any sales be solicited

"No personal information of mobile cellular subscribers was received from the service providers," MCMC said in the statement.

In a separate post on its Facebook page, MCMC said, "The 'Handphone User Survey' is an annual survey conducted by MCMC. Respondents for this survey will only be contacted from these two numbers: 03-86888235 and 03-86888234."

MCMC advised the public to make a report to the MCMC Complaint Portal if they received calls from any other numbers.

Any announcements on the completion or an extension of the survey period will be announced on its website.
