Despite his guilty conviction, Datuk Ibrahim Ali insisted today that he had never acted in contempt of court and said he will appeal his sentence at a High Court here.

Perkasa boss Ibrahim Ali was sentenced to one-day jail and RM20,000 fine for contempt of court against a judge hearing the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's defamation case against Utusan Melayu.

On Jan 21, Anwar won his defamation suit against Utusan Melayu over publication of two articles on his comments to BBC during an interview on homosexuality laws.
Justice Datuk VT Singham said the Umno-owned daily did not practise responsible journalism, in addition to disregarding a golden opportunity to correct itself after Anwar had sent a legal notice asking for clarification.

Anwar had filed the RM50 million defamation suit against the defendants for publishing two articles which appeared in Utusan Malaysia on Jan 17, 2012. The articles were based on an interview given to the BBC a year ago.
