Khairy Jamaluddin, who lost the fight for Sungai Buloh in the 15th General Election (GE15), appeared dejected while sharing his thoughts
Taking to Instagram today, 20 November, the former health minister said that elections are a basis for any functioning democracy, but they are also a way to tell if politicians are good enough or not.
"One of the most harrowing things about being a politician is being publicly validated every five years [...] If people like you enough or not. Those are the rules and you have to accept [them] when people don't think you're good enough to represent them," wrote the 46-year-old, who was ostracised by his own party.
Khairy was told by UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to vacate his safe seat of Rembau to make way for UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and contest from Sungai Buloh.
He lost to Pakatan Harapan's (PH) Datuk R Ramanan, who won by a slim majority of 2,693 votes.
According to Khairy, the results show that he wasn't good enough
"I think I tried my best. But I wasn't good enough," he said while admitting that a loss is a loss regardless of how close the fight may have been or "how many people express disappointment at your loss".
He, however, went on to state that he doesn't think it's the end of the road for him.
"Is this the end of the road? I'm quite certain it isn't. But I want to reflect on this before I think about what I do next," he said, adding, "The truth is, I'm exhausted. I haven't really had time to rest since I was asked to manage the pandemic. It's been a tough two years for me [to steer] the country out of COVID-19."
For now, he is looking forward to watch the World Cup on television.
