A national hockey athlete has shared the difficulty she is facing in getting into a university despite getting good results in SPM and matriculation

Kirandeep Kaur expressed her disappointment in a tweet that was posted yesterday, 8 September.

In the tweet, she said, "I'm a national athlete. I got 9A's for SPM [but] I don't get any scholarship."

The 19-year-old hockey athlete also mentioned her achievement as she obtained a 3.88 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in matriculation despite going to the Junior World Cup last April, which was three weeks before the examination.

"Yet, it's so difficult to [be accepted into a] university. I feel so unappreciated," she added.

The tweet has gained over 2,400 retweets, 170 quote tweets, and about 6,400 likes.

Kirandeep made clear that her tweet was referring to applications for private universities rather than public ones

Some netizens were confused since the results for public university placement from the University Central Unit (UPU) have yet to come out.

A Twitter user quoted Kirandeep's tweet, saying, "But the UPU result hasn't come out yet," to which she replied, saying, "Yes, you're right. I was referring to the private entry."

The National Sports Council (NSC) has since responded to Kirandeep's tweet to clarify the situation

"NSC through the Malaysian Athlete Career and Education (MACE) always provides assistance for national athletes who wish to further their studies to the highest level," NSC explained in a series of tweets.

It clarified that her application to study medicine at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) through private entry was rejected because she did not qualify, as informed by Kirandeep's family.

"The MACE review also found that Kirandeep Kaur had directly submitted an application to the University Central Unit (UPU) and the placement result to the local university will only be known between 25-27 September," read the tweet.

"Currently, we have to wait for the placement result from UPU, and MACE is always ready to help Kirandeep if her application is rejected."
