UMNO's Khairy Jamaluddin, who was voted out in the 15th General Election (GE15), has spoken out against his party president

According to Khairy, negotiations on the formation of a new government should not involve Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairperson.

Taking to his Twitter account today, 22 November, Khairy said that Zahid "no longer has the moral legitimacy as president of UMNO and must step down immediately".

Zahid is leading the coalition discussions with Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairperson Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim with the possibility of a PH-BN unity government, while others in UMNO appear not sold on the idea.

Khairy said Zahid is president only by name

Meanwhile, in another tweet, Khairy pointed out that as a member of the party, he has the right to speak up, even if it's against the president

The elections have resulted in a hung parliament

While PH won the highest number of seats at 82, and PN came in second with 73 seats, BN — despite suffering its worst-ever defeat in elections — has become the "kingmaker" due to its 30 seats.

Both PH and PN need the support of parliamentarians from other parties to have a simple majority of 112 seats or more to form the next government. Neither of them can form a government without BN.
