Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the Federal Territories (FT) Mufti's office received a question about whether Muslims are allowed to wish non-Muslims "Rest in Peace"

The office responded through their website and stated that Muslims are not permitted to wish non-Muslims "Rest in Peace."

"A Muslim cannot pray for forgiveness for a non-Muslim because that is clearly stated in our holy texts," said the office of the mufti, Datuk Luqman Abdullah.

He went on to say that Muslims are forbidden to say the phrase "Rest in Peace" because it is a form of prayer recited by non-Muslims.

Several hadiths and Quran verses were cited by the mufti's office to highlight on the matter including Surah At Taubah (113)

"It is not fitting, for the Prophet and those who believe, that they should pray for forgiveness for Pagans, even though they be of kin after it is clear to them that they are companions of the Fire," the text said.

However, the mufti's office went on to say that Muslims are allowed to express their condolences to family members, neighbours and friends who have died, regardless of religion or race.

“In fact, offering your condolences is a sunnah (the habitual practice of Prophet Muhammad)," said Luqman.
