Fresh durians from Malaysia — harvested only after they naturally fall from the tree — are quickly becoming a hit in China, with demand soaring among consumers who value ripeness and flavour

According to SCMP, industry insiders report that sales of Malaysian durians in China have increased tenfold compared to last year, largely thanks to a reliable supply chain and improved logistics.

"Fresh durians, which are transported to China by air within 48 hours of pickup, are well-received by affluent Chinese consumers.

"Our Malaysian suppliers are able to increase exports of the fruit by 30% this year, which has largely boosted our confidence in propelling sales here," said Guo Min, deputy marketing director of fruit distributor Joy Wing Mau's China operations.

Vivian Wang, marketing director at Dole Asia Holdings, echoed this optimism, telling SCMP that fresh Malaysian durians are among the fastest-growing imported fruits in China, opening up exciting opportunities for Malaysian growers.

While Thailand continues to dominate the Chinese durian market, Malaysian durians are carving out a niche thanks to their unique harvesting method

Unlike durians from Thailand and Vietnam, which are often cut from the tree before ripening, Malaysian durians are left to ripen naturally and are only collected once they fall to the ground.

Despite only entering the Chinese market for fresh durians in 2024, Malaysia recorded RM24.8 million in sales between August and December, according to the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry

However, Thailand still commands a 57% share of China's USD6.99 billion (RM30 billion) durian market, while Vietnam accounts for 38%.
