A 63-year-old man in Kuala Lumpur has publicly disowned his daughter after her gambling addiction and mounting debts dragged him into trouble with loan sharks

According to The Star, the father, Lan Chee Kong, used his retirement savings and borrowed from relatives to help his 24-year-old daughter settle her RM250,000 debt.

However, he was devastated to learn that she had recently borrowed from loan sharks again, and this time, used his name as collateral.

"I confronted my daughter at her home to understand why the ah longs were harassing us.

"It was then that I discovered she had shared my identity card details with them," Lan said during a press conference at Wisma MCA on Tuesday, 4 March.

In a shocking turn of events, Lan revealed that his daughter and her husband had even filed a police report against him, accusing him of being responsible for the debts

"They shifted all the blame to me and even went as far as filing a police report, falsely accusing me of taking on the debts," he said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

Lan told the media that he was left heartbroken after the incident, and decided to publicly sever ties with his daughter in hopes of stopping the harassment from loan sharks.

He shared that just a few days ago, and again this week, two groups of loan sharks had turned up at his home, claiming his daughter had borrowed another RM41,000.

"I can no longer help her repay any more debts. Her actions have left me completely heartbroken. That is why I am officially severing my father-daughter relationship with her," he said.

At the press conference, MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Datuk Seri Michael Chong cautioned the public against borrowing from unlicensed moneylenders

"Only borrow from regulated and licensed lenders, as most ah longs will resort to extortion if repayments are not met," he warned.

He also shared that the bureau has received 42 reports of loan shark extortion cases since January this year.
