PKR president Anwar Ibrahim claims to have 'formidable' and 'convincing' support from members of Parliament (MPs) to form a new government

Anwar held a special press conference earlier today, 23 September, during which he made the claim about securing a "strong, confident, and formidable majority".

"The people of Malaysia deserve leadership which can navigate effectively during these turbulent times. Instead, we have an unstable government whose inability to handle the crisis in driving the country towards an economic recession and rising racial tension," he said.

"We have not seen it mobilise all the country's resources and capabilities to face the crisis head-on. What has happened, instead, is the government that's been busy distributing positions, appointments, and contracts to order to cling to an extremely bare razor-thin majority in parliament."

According to Anwar, the people have been kept in the dark about the decision being taken in the Cabinet and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has not held a single press conference since taking office.

"It is difficult for us to know what the 70 ministers are doing. We have never been informed about the deliberations taking place in the Cabinet. Until now — seven months after taking office during an unprecedented national and international crisis — the Prime Minister has not held a single press conference following his regular Cabinet meeting."

The PKR president then added that he has received convincing support from members of parliament (MPs) for him to present to His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The meeting was pospoted due to the Agong falling ill.

Citing his "clear and indisputable support and majority", Anwar said that the government led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has fallen

He said that he will meet with the Agong when he regains his health and will provide more information to the public about what happens next.

According to Anwar, this government will represent all people, with majority Malay-Bumiputera and fair representation of all races in this country.

"We hare committed to uphold the principles of the constitution that recognises the position of Islam, the sovereignty of Malay rulers ad upholds the position of the Malay language as the official language and the special position of the Malays and Bumiputera as well as give assurance to defend the rights of all races," he said.

"Lastly, I would like to say to all Malaysians, I promise to form a government with integrity and commitment to address the crisis that befell the country and put an end to corruption and fighting for the wellbeing of the people."
