A small Iranian passenger plane crashed Sunday while taking off from an airport near the capital, Tehran, state media reported. The aircraft, an Iran-140 jet typically used for short domestic flights, crashed near Mehrabad airport, west of Tehran, Iran's state-run IRNA news agency reported.

The Iran-140 Sepahan Air jetliner had barely left the airport, as it crashed shortly after take off, on the outskirts of the capital at 09:45 (0515 GMT) on Sunday, according to Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency.

The Mahrabad airport is situated in a western suburb of Tehran. It flies planes to domestic destinations and a small number of international ones. The incident is the latest in a series of airplane catastrophes suffered by Iran - the majority of them blamed on outdated equipment and poor maintenance.
