As a result, they intended to bury the infant at a nearby burial ground.
Thankfully, an elderly neighbour saved the baby's life by alerting local police before the burial took place
A team of police officers rushed to the scene and saved the baby, who was then sent to Panayapatti Government Primary Health Centre for emergency care.
Both the mother and the infant were later referred to Pudukkottai Government Raniyar Hospital for treatment.
A male collage student has been arrested in connection with the attempted burial
According to The Hindu, Silambarasan, 21, is believed to be the baby's biological father. Police believe he played a role in the family's decision to bury the baby.
The infant is now in safe hands, and away from the family who attempted the burial
"The infant is healthy and under the care of two of our staff members. Once discharged from the hospital, the baby will be handed over to a specialised adoption agency, where she will be given proper care," said District Child Protection Officer D Vasanth Kumar.
The mother has been legally deemed unfit to care for the baby.
