An Orang Asli Village In Simpang Pulai Was Evacuated Because Its Ground Cracked Open

The land which the village sits on was previously refilled.

Some residents of Kampung Pawong, a Pos Slim Orang Asli settlement in Simpang Pulai, were evacuated after three houses were damaged by a 1.5-metre deep crack that opened up

The 50-metre-long, 1.2-metre wide, and 1.5-metre deep crack happened around 3pm yesterday, 23 October.

Residents who were living in a row of six houses have since been evacuated, reported Bernama.

Officials have determined that erosion leading to soil movement is the cause of the incident

Perak Minerals and Geoscience Department director Datuk Ahmad Zukni Ahmad Khalil told Malay Mail, "Observation at site found the land where the village sits on has been previously refilled."

He added that the crack appeared along the alignment of the river, which is a mere 10 metres away. 

Due to its proximity to the river, occupants in six of the 15 houses were evacuated over concerns of their safety

"Right now, the area is unsafe. Heavy rain and its proximity to the river bank are the primary factors," Datuk Ahmad said.
