A Man Actually Called And Texted His Ex 21,807 Times Because He Wanted Her To Thank Him

He admits that, with hindsight, "it was stupid" to phone and text his ex-girlfriend 21,807 times over a 10-month period. He was sent to prison Thursday.

A 33-year-old man, who has not been named, was so obsessed with extracting a "thank you" from his ex for upgrades he made to their apartment before their 2011 break-up that he harassed her in calls and texts – 21,807 of them, over the course of 10 months

The unnamed defendant, a 33-year-old man from Rhone in southern France, began to harass the victim, a 32-year-old teacher, after she broke off the relationship in 2011, according to the Guardian which reported the story on Friday.

The man, who has been hospitalized for depression in the past, said he could not accept the break up. He was apparently demanding the victim thank him for doing chores around their apartment.

“She tried to block her line, but he phoned her parents instead and her workplace,” Manuella Spee, the victim’s lawyer, told AFP.

In the 90 minutes it took for the woman to file charges, she received over 100 phone calls, her lawyer said, according to RFI

When the ex-girlfriend, a 32- year-old teacher, filed charges, "police noted over 100 incoming calls during the 90 minutes it took to file charges", said Spee.

"It was stupid," the man admitted in a Lyon court on Thursday

“At the time my logic was that until she returns the money, she pays back for work I carried in our apartment or at least says thank you, I would not stop the calls.”

He was fined 1,000 euros (USD1,296) and sentenced to 10 months in jail, though six months of that sentence was suspended

The unnamed defendant, who had made the calls to demand the woman thank him for fixing up their flat, was given a 10-month sentence – six months of which was suspended – and a €1,000 (£793) fine. He will also have to undergo psychiatric treatment and is barred from all contact with the woman he harassed, lawyers in the case told AFP.

The man, who has acknowledged that he struggled with depression in the past, is not allowed to continue contacting her and will have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. The teacher, on the other hand, has “enjoyed a fantastic summer time, with no phone calls,” her lawyer said, adding that the woman “hopes it will last.”
