Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir has confirmed that he is the very important person (VIP) whose daughter was arrested on Sunday, 23 August, for breaching the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO)

Mukhriz, who is the Jerlun Member of Parliament (MP) and the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, told reporters that his daughter and son-in-law were picked up by the police during a recent raid at a pub in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), Kuala Lumpur, reported New Straits Times.

He said they deserved to be slapped with a RM1,000 compound each. They were arrested for being at the pub past 12am during the RMCO.

"It is true that my daughter and son-in-law were taken to the police station together with 27 others for breaching the curfew of RMCO," he told reporters yesterday, 27 August.

The PEJUANG president said his daughter and son-in-law deserved to be punished because he had previously warned them

The 55-year-old said, "I had told my family members during this RMCO, don't breach any rules because we need to set a good example. I am sad and they deserve to be issued with the compound."

Mukhriz said he made no attempts to reduce the amount of the compound after expressing his gratitude over the police's stern and fair action against his family members.

"Had they been given a 'discount', Tun (his father Dr Mahathir) and I would have been accused of interfering in police business, asking them to give special treatment to my daughter and son-in-law," he said.

When asked if the controversy will affect the results of the upcoming by-election, Mukhriz said the issues surrounding Barisan Nasional will pose a bigger threat

"This has nothing to do with it. There's plenty of other issues out there that could have an impact on the Barisan Nasional candidate instead," he told reporters at Felda Besout 3 in Trolak, Perak on Thursday.

He was there to campaign for independent candidate Amir Kusyairi Mohamad Tanusi in the Slim by-election happening this Saturday, 29 August.
