8-Year-Old Girl Dies After Suffering 65 Hornet Stings While Playing Outside In Terengganu

An eight-year-old girl has died after suffering hornet stings while she was playing out with her brother and friends in Dungun on Saturday

She along with her six-year-old brother was stung by hornets in an incident at Felda Kerteh 4 in Dungun, Kuala Terengganu on Saturday, 30 May. The kids were playing at a hill near their home.

According to a Bernama report, the brother, Muhamad Azib, rushed into the house at around 3pm to his mother, Rohayu Mat Lazim, in pain and with swellings on his body.

"He came to tell me that his sister had been stung badly," Rohayu was quoted as saying.

The mother said she took both the kids to the Ketengah Jaya Clinic.

They were then referred to the Dungun Hospital, and at 8pm, they were transferred to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ), according to the mother, who said that her daughter was very weak at the time.

Nur Nazihah reportedly suffered 65 hornet stings.

"She died due to internal organ failure from toxins released by the hornet stings," Terengganu Health director Dr Nor Azimi Yunus was quoted as saying by Bernama today, 31 May.

According to the mother, doctors at HSNZ had informed her that Nur Nazihah's internal organs had been affected, while her son's condition was stable and improving.

During the incident yesterday, Nur Nazihah had gotten stuck at a fence

"I don’t know how they could have gone there to play as my husband and I have time and again reminded them to avoid the area," said the mother of five, adding that at the time of the incident, while other children managed to escape, her daughter got stung as she got stuck at a fence.
