5 People Killed In 3 Separate Accidents

None of the three accidents, which happened in Penang and Sabah, involve drink-driving.

In Kepala Batas, Penang, two people were killed when the multi-purpose vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a drain last night

The accident, which happened at 11pm Saturday, 20 June, also left three others of the family seriously injured. The family was en route from Sungai Dua to Sungai Petani.

A Bernama report identified the dead as 20-year-old Muhammad Ruszamil Mohd Fazil, who was driving the vehicle, and his mother, 60-year-old Rusnah Osman. Both died at the scene.

One of the injured includes a two-year-old boy, who suffered severe head trauma. He is Rusnah's grandson, identified as Muhammad Faizureen Abdul Muhaimin.

The other two injured are Rusnah's sons, 36-year-old Mohd Fairus and 30-year-old Muhammad Faizul.

"The family, who is from Taiping, was on their way to Sungai Petani, Kedah, to visit relatives, when the driver was believed to have lost control of the car, causing the vehicle to skid and plunged into the drain," Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district police chief Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Noorzainy Mohd Noor said.

ACP Noorzainy said that while the exact cause of the accident is not yet known, the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless or dangerous driving.

During a separate accident in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, two more were killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a lamp post

Incidentally, the accident in Sabah also happened at 11pm, 20 June.

The car was travelling in the direction of Kampung Minodung to Kampung Kaingaran in Tambunan, according to Keningau district police chief DSP Shahrudin Mat Husain, when the crash happened.

In the accident, two others were seriously injured.

"A 25-year-old man was driving the Proton Wira car with three passengers, including two women. On reaching a bend, the car is believed to have gone out of control and hit the lamp post," he said, adding that the crash left the driver and the other back passenger seriously injured.

"The impact split the car in two and all four were thrown out of the vehicle. The front passenger and one back passenger, both women, were killed."

Meanwhile, a 44-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a separate incident

The man's motorcycle skidded and crashed into the wall of a graveyard at Jalan Siram, Butterworth, at 12.15am on Sunday, 21 June, according to a report in The Star.

The motorcyclist was identified as V. Gerald from Kampung Perlis by ACP Noorzainy.

"The victim was on his way from the Telaga Air traffic light and was heading towards Sungai Nyior when he lost control of his machine and skidded to the left side of the road before crashing into the graveyard wall at the roadside," he was quoted as saying by the English daily.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

None of the three accidents involves drink-driving.
