A 24-year-old woman, who was sharing a rented house in Cheras with three other women, has been raped by her housemate's male friend

The crime happened about a week ago when the suspect attacked the victim while she was in her room, according to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid.

Following the incident, the victim, who works as a clerk, lodged a police report last Sunday, 4 September, stating that she had been raped by her housemate's male friend, Harian Metro reported on 9 September.

ACP Nik Ros said that the suspect has since been identified and an investigation is underway in accordance with Section 376 of the Penal Code. However, it wasn't reported if an arrest has been made.

Under Section 376 of the Penal Code, a person found guilty can be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 20 years, and shall also be liable to whipping.

The victim has since tried to die by suicide

According to ACP Nik Ros, the victim had become depressed after the suspect raped her.

After having lodged the police report, the 24-year-old woman attempted suicide at her rented house in Cheras. However, one of her housemates noticed and rushed her to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (PPUKM) at 9pm last Sunday.

She is now in stable condition and has been sent back to her family village in Johor.

"The doctor who treated her has also lodged a police report," ACP Nik Ros said on Wednesday, adding that they have recorded the testimony of a housemate to assist in the investigation.
