15 Killed In Perak Crash Involving MPV & Bus Carrying UPSI Students

Fifteen people were killed in an accident involving a Perodua Alza and a bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) on the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Perak today, 9 June

According to Harian Metro, the incident occurred at 1.10am when Hospital Gerikwas informed of a fatal road accident on the highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik.

The Gerik fire and rescue station deployed a team of firefighters and arrived at the scene at 2.11am.

Upon arrival, the firefighters discovered the bus carrying UPSI students had overturned after colliding with the Perodua Alza.

Thirteen individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital

Fourteen UPSI students and a bus attendant were among the victims killed, reported The Star.

In a statement, the Civil Defence Force (APM) said a total of 48 victims were involved in the accident.

Two victims are currently being treated in the red zone for critical wounds, 20 are in the yellow zone with semi-critical conditions, and six are in the green zone, reported the New Straits Times.

The UPSI bus was reportedly travelling from Jerteh, Terengganu to the university's main campus

UPSI vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff confirmed that university students were involved in the accident and said the university is currently awaiting further information from the authorities, reported Harian Metro.

On Facebook, both the university and its vice-chancellor urged the public to pray for the victims. UPSI also pledged to provide assistance and support to the victims' families.
