13 UMPSA Students Shaken But Safe After Yet Another Midnight Bus Crash
Their express bus rear-ended a trailer along the East Coast Expressway last night.
13 university students were among 28 passengers who miraculously escaped unhurt after their express bus rear-ended a trailer along the East Coast Expressway shortly after midnight, 10 June
The incident occurred at around 1am at KM161.5 near Maran, Pahang, as the bus was heading eastbound from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, Kuala Lumpur, to Terminal Sentral Kuantan.
Maran district police chief Supt Wong Kim Wai said the tour bus was travelling in the left lane when it collided with the rear of the trailer, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and into a ditch.
"All 28 passengers did not sustain any injuries. They were transferred to another bus to continue their journey to Terminal Sentral Kuantan," he said in a statement earlier today.
Both the bus driver and the trailer driver were also unharmed
Initial findings suggest the crash was caused by the bus driver's failure to maintain a safe following distance. The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the LN 166/59 for failing to control a vehicle.
Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) confirmed that its students were among the passengers onboard
According to UMPSA vice-chancellor Professor Dr Yatimah Alias, the students had departed from Kuala Lumpur at 8.30pm yesterday, 9 June, and were scheduled to make a stop at the UMPSA Gambang campus.
"We are thankful that all passengers were unharmed, and our students arrived safely at campus around 4am," she said, adding that the university received the students at the UMPSA Gambang mosque, where they were offered food, emotional support, and temporary accommodation.
