Curry Puff Earns 5th Spot Among World's Best Pastries, Surpassing Croissant And Kunafa

The list also featured another Malaysian item, Rotiboy, placing it 61st.

Known for its delicious combination of flaky texture and flavourful fillings, curry puffs have not only captured the hearts of locals but have now earned a ranking of the 5th best pastry in the world

TasteAtlas, an international food travel guide, recently released its list of the Top 100 Pastries in the World.

The list placed curry puff as the 5th best pastry in the world, with a score of 4.6 out of 5.

This beloved Malaysian pastry outshined renowned pastries such as croissant and kunafa, which secured the 8th and 10th positions, respectively.

According to TasteAtlas, it is believed that curry puffs were invented by the Malays from Malaysia and parts of Sumatra and Borneo.

"Today, there are numerous versions of karipap, so instead of potato and chicken curry, it can be filled with various other ingredients such as tuna, sardines, and beef rendang," read the description on the portal.

Malaysian bun Rotiboy also secured 61st place in the global rankings, with a score of 4.3 out of 5

Invented by Penangite Hiro Tan in 1998, the Malaysian bun took inspiration from conchas, a traditional Mexican sweet bread roll, and was initially marketed as Mexican coffee buns, reported TasteAtlas.

It is said that after their introduction in 1998, the buns quickly gained popularity, leading to the widespread success of the franchise across Asian and Arab countries.

The signature bun is now commonly referred to as Rotiboy or Roti Kopi.
